I Have a Question About Cancer ISBN: 9781785926945
Gaines, Arlen Grad and Polsky, Meredith Englander
Published by Jessica Kingsley, 2019
This remarkable picture book with lots of really good basic information about cancer is aimed specifically at children with learning difficulties, but will be extremely useful for any child facing the news that someone he or she loves has cancer. The book is made up of a series of questions, all of which are answered seriously and thoughtfully, questions such as: what does if mean that someone has cancer? How do people get cancer? Can I catch it? Why would people take medicine that makes them feel sicker? And, inevitably, Can someone die from cancer? There are lots more, some of them rather unexpected such as, Are my days going to be different because someone I love has cancer? The illustrations use SymbolStix, a symbol based language for visual thinkers, and they are very clear and concise; furthermore, they will appeal to children. There is a section for parents and carers in how to use the book effectively, and there is also a secondary telling of the main story that is much simpler, mainly meant for children to be able to read the information in a visual way rather than through words. This is a truly impressive book that will be of help to any family needing an explanation of cancer for children. Available from Amazon, from book shops, and from the publisher: www.jkp.com.
