I Don’t Want to Be Small ISBN: 9781408894064

The little boy is very small for his age, much smaller than his schoolmates, and it makes him sad and cross when he can’t ride on the big rides at the fair because there is a height restriction, and he can’t see anything when he’s in crowds, nor wear his older brothers hand-me-downs. Furthermore, he seems to be invisible. This makes him so angry that he throws his teddy up in the air - not a good idea as teddy lands in a tree! ‘Oh, what have I done! Being this small ruins all of my fun!’ However many times he tries in all sorts of original and funny ways, he can’t get teddy down. Perhaps if he eats all his greens or grows quickly, like a sunflower, but then he only gets muddy and wet from watering himself in a pot of soil. Oh dear. Then help arrives in the form of a friendly, tall girl. She can’t reach teddy either, but together they can, with the boy on her shoulders. They then play together happily, sharing the teddy and making friends: ‘We play games and laugh for the rest of the day I’m small and she’s tall and we’re perfect that way.’ Wonderful and very funny pictures with lots of ethnicity on show help along the rhyming text, and we learn how wonderful it is to be just the way we are.
