A lovely, funny easy-read that will have early readers laughing out loud. Captain Cutlass has to wear glasses, but he doesn't want his crew of pirates to know because 'Pirates don't wear glasses' and he is afraid the fierce crew will make him walk the plank if they find out. His parrot, Peggle' who is always on his shoulder, is constantly reminding him to put the glasses on, but he refuses. This makes for lots of odd happenings while the Captain and his crew on the Barracuda go in search of Treasure Island. He doesn't see the big albatross that bombards the ship with guano and thinks it's white, sticky rain. Then a squid tries to sink the Barracuda, and Captain Cutlass thinks it's only seaweed. By now, the crew has begun to realise that the Captain can't see much, and when a whale attacks and the Captain thinks it's another boat, they don't make a move when he 'boards' the whale with his cutlass, only to be thrown clear up into crow's nest - with Peggle still holding on for dear life. Of course, he can't read the treasure map when they get to the island, and the crew finally rebels and threatens mutiny. Alls well that ends well, and not only does Captain Cutlass use his glasses to read the map (and find the treasure), but the rest of the crew put on their sunglasses - which they've had with them all along. The pictures in a comic style are great fun, particularly those of Peggle whilst trying to convince the Captain of his mistakes. 'Boggle me eyeballs!' said Captain Cutlass. 'Pirates do wear glasses.' Should help the most convinced glasses-refuser to reconsider!
