The Giant from Nowhere ISBN: 9781785925351
Published by Jessica Kingsley Publishers, 2018
This charming picture-book-fairy-tale has modern elements that make it really accessible to modern children. The Giant is very lonely. He is the only person in a place called Nowhere, and there is no one to talk to. Off he goes to find Somewhere, which he does, but the villagers are terrified of the huge newcomer. This makes Giant very unhappy and angry, and when he stomps about, the village is badly damaged. Now the villagers are angry and call in the police. The Giant is found and must have a trial to discover his guilt - which he admits sadly. The villagers decide that putting him in jail will do no good, and that he should have a community sentence: the making good of the village houses and shops. He does this readily and well, and the villagers become fond of him. He is sad, though, because no one really talks to him. A small boy, who has been the catalyst throughout the story, suggests that the Giant is still lonely and needs someone else like him to cure the loneliness. A 'lonely hearts' ad is put in the newspaper and is answered by a lovely young giant who is just the ticket for our lonely friend, and a happy wedding ensues. But there is a problem: Giant has no name, so the little boy comes up with the perfect one, Sam Boady (or Somebody so our giant friend is now Somebody from Somewhere)), and the two giants live happily ever after in true fairy tale style. Wonderfully told with bright illustrations that are greatly appealing, this will be super for classes learning about inclusivity, and as the author has taught SEN groups and children whose English is a second language, it is also aimed at these. An accompanying set of teaching resources is available online from the publishers, the code for which is included in the information at the back of the book. Available from Amazon, from book shops, and from the publisher: ww.jkp.com.
