In this story that helps explain gender identity in clear terms, we meet five children, each of whom is different to the other. They are friends, and at school lunchtime they decide to build a house. The house needs all their assorted talents, and as they work together, we meet each of them and discover not only their talents, but also their gender identities. Ivy, who is a girl but dresses like a boy and cuts her hair short, likes to run very fast; Alex likes to build things, and feels like both a boy and a girl. He prefers to be called by his name or by 'they': 'they feel uncomfortable otherwise'. Sam is a boy who is very artistic and has long hair; he decorates the house with flowers and leaves from the playground. Jackson is a boy who likes to wear dresses and is very strong: 'We can all wear the clothes that we like.' Tom was born a girl, but has always felt like a boy, and so now everyone calls him Tom and 'he', and he is happy; his special talent is spelling, and he makes a sign for the front of the house. When the house is finished they all go inside to play, and their other school friends join them. The bright pictures are fun, and this will be a good way to teach gender differences as well as the fact that we are all disparate but can work and live together happily.
