The Prince and the Potty ISBN: 9781782952572

Very, very funny and very, very whacky, this picture book will be enjoyed more by older boys who have not yet mastered their potty training - and also by their parents, who will find lots of humour beyond the ken of their four year old. The name George is not mentioned, but as a Duke and Duchess are his parents, it is obvious who we are talking about here. As he is growing up, the Prince's parents take him to the Royal Potty Workshops, where potties have been made for royalty ever since 871 'in the time of Alfred the Little before he was Alfred the Great'. If you can accept that, you will find the rest of the book just as hilarious! The Prince and his parents are shown around the Royal Potty Museum where they see all sorts of kings and queens and their own particular potties. Evidently kings and queens have to 'learn to use their potties quickly because they cannot rule the country wearing nappies.' They are then shown various special potties made with the Prince in mind. There is an eco one that dissolves after use (hmmm), one that plays God Save the Queen, and another made in the shape of a Royal Carriage (pulled by corgis!) There are problems with each of these, but the winner is a Royal Robo Potty! It has a 'smelly detector alarm' that goes off when it's needed and comes by itself. This is great until the Prince goes on a Royal visit with his parents to a nursery school and discovers that the potty (brought along in its special box) is not a potty at all, but is Nanny's hat, Nanny having had an 'elder moment! Oh dear! Being a resourceful Prince, he manages to find an ordinary potty, and that is 'just fine'. The illustrations are as whacky as the text, and while I'm not absolutely sure that this is going to encourage boys to use the potty, I suspect it will be read and enjoyed by parents and even older boys who don't need encouragement any more.
