Perry Panda: A Story about Parental Depression ISBN: 9781785924125
Published by Jessica Kingsley Publishers, 2017
Wonderful story for quite young children about depression in parents and how it is never their fault! Perry, whose mum has always been supportive and fun to be with, has suddenly become sad, sometimes snappy and unable to keep from crying. Luckily, Perry has a gran to whom he can run, and when he becomes convinced that it is something bad he has done that has made his mum change so, he goes to gran to ask her: 'Is it because I'm naughty? Or I didn't eat my peas? Is it because I broke that glass or fell and grazed my knees?' Gran is very understanding and is able to explain to Perry that grown-ups sometimes become very sad, but it is never the child's fault. It could be bad news or that something has gone wrong in their lives, or it could just be a general sadness that comes along. Perry asks how they can help, and gran explains that there may be lots of different things that could be the answer - long walks, or talking,or pills, or lots of sleep, or maybe even a hospital stay. But whatever helps is likely to take some time and that mum mustn't be rushed. But Perry can think of one thing that might help right away: 'There's nothing that feels better than cuddles, warm and snug. So he runs upstairs to find his mum and gives her a great big hug.' The story is right on! It couldn't be better about explaining to a young child something of what is going on in his or her parent's mind and at a level that the child can understand readily. The rhymes are fun too, and the pictures are a real treat - full of muted, effective background colour that reflects very well the mum's sad feelings, but also gives hope in lovely sunsets and lots of super, great big pandas! Every library should have this very special book where parents who need it can find it easily.
