No one else in Princess Polly's family uses nappies except her baby sister, and Polly has begun to think it might be a good idea for her to be more grown up too. So mummy and Princess Polly go down to the 'Royal Retailers' and look for a very special potty for a special princess. She is pleased with her choice, but rather confused. What is it for? Mummy explains it is for 'doing your wees and poos in, instead of in your nappy.' Polly must try this out by sitting in it. Then she must choose 'grown-up princess pants'. We are given an array of colourful ones to choose from. She practices pulling them up and down, and then is ready to try to use the potty. This isn't easy at first, and she only produces a tiny amount. Mummy gives her some rules: mummy or daddy must wipe her bottom, always from front to back, then the results must be flushed away - noisy but helping make the toilet clean again - then she must wash her hands. Sometimes there are accidents, but mummy and daddy are very reassuring. Doing poos is harder, but when Princess Polly manages her very first one, everyone is terribly pleased. Now Polly feels properly grown up and looks forward to helping her baby sister go through the same 'adventure'. Little girls will love the princess theme, and the very down-to-earth approach of the information certainly gives everything it is necessary for a young child to understand when going through their own adventure of learning how to use the loo. The edition I saw was a board book and has a button to push which gives a cheer each time something is accomplished. There is also the chance for little ones to choose the potty or the pants they particularly like, so a certain amount of sharing in the process goes on. This is an excellent approach to toilet training, combining the glamour of the pink princess effect with the practicalities of learning an important function.
