Can I tell you about Down Syndrome? ISBN: 9781849055017
Elliott, Elizabeth and Thapp, Manjit
Published by Jessica Kingsley Publishers, 2015
David, who is 12, has Down Syndrome and tells his story himself, and this gives it an immediacy that is important. It is his sister who is listed as author, but she knows him so well that her being his amanuensis works well. David begins by saying, 'Don't forget that I'm just David. Down syndrome is not the biggest part of me!' There follows a little about DS and what it is - the man it was named for, the 47th chromosome and the chap who identified it - the fact that you can't 'catch' it, and the fact that people with it often have learning difficulties and/or a heart condition. He tells us about 'Portage' and Learning interventions he had as a baby to help with muscle development. Communication can be difficult, and speech therapy as well as using Makaton symbols or pictures can help. He loves doing exercise like riding his bike, going skiing, and playing basketball, and these are important for muscle building too. He loves Dr Who and has seen the CDs so often that he's memorised some of them! He hates getting picked on or bullied and wants to be able to play normally with his friends. This means sometimes they have to explain things carefully or repeat the rules. He has been to both main stream and special schools and talks about the differences in each. Mostly, he wants to be treated like everyone else - to get in trouble if he's rude, to be accepted as an individual - to be himself. Black and white illustrations are a good addition, and there is advice to teachers, to families and to parents. An excellent list of publications, resources and organisations lends a lot to the importance of this book. It will be of great importance to everyone who knows, teaches, loves or meets someone with DS. Available from Amazon, from good book shops, and from the publisher at: www.jkp.com.
