That Is Actually MY Blanket, Baby! ISBN: 9781848696891

When Bella was a baby, she had a new blanket, called Blanket! And as she grew, she took Blanket everywhere with her; it got muddy, and sticky with glue and paint, and there were splotches of food on it too, but she loved it all the more. Then, one day, a new baby appeared at Bella's house, and there was a new blanket to go with the new baby. Bella loved the baby almost as much as she loved her blanket, but when the baby cried, Bella wished he wouldn't. She tried everything to stop him, but it was only when he got hold of Bella's beloved Blanket that the crying stopped. What to do? She can't let him keep the blanket because it is hers, so she has to come up with an idea. As he grows (and we see them both growing) she will teach him how to paint and 'stick things on things' and take his new blanket everywhere with him, and he will soon 'love his blanket ALMOST as much...as I love you.' This tender and warm picture book shows us in illustration as well as text just how welcome a new member of the family can be to an older sibling. Bella shows no resentment to the baby brother but comes up with the perfect solution to the problem of his wanting her Blanket. Perhaps mum rescues Blanket while the baby sleeps and Bella learns to keep it well out of his way until his own blanket has developed its patina of age. We aren't told that, but it could be suggested to a child concerned that something as important to Bella as Blanket might disappear into the new baby's crib forever. This is an outstanding book in both text and illustration and could well be used before the birth of a new sibling.
