I'm a big sister ISBN: 9780061900624
Published by HarperCollins Children's Books, 2010
The little girl is very excited because there is a new baby at her house (no sex identified) and this makes her a big sister. She soon learns that the baby is too small to walk or talk or play or eat exciting things like 'pizza or apples or ice cream', but the baby loves milk and sleeping and being warm, and it likes to look at her big sister too. She must ask if she wants to hold the baby, but when she does, sitting carefully in an armchair, she is gentle and sings 'baby songs'. When the baby cries, dad knows just what to do: the baby needs a change of 'diaper' (this is American) and a bottle, and the little girl can help. The family look at pictures of the little girl when she was a baby, and she understands that once she was small too. She likes being big and being able to eat 'pizza and apples and ice cream', and she knows she is special to her parents - as is the baby. Warm watercolour illustrations help make the text joyful and positive. There is a book for boys too:'' I'm a Big Brother (ISBN 9780688145071), which I haven't seen but is by the same authors and will have much the same format. Good, encouraging information in a pleasant context.
