Down's Syndrome (Young Explorer: What's it Like?) ISBN: 9780431112268
Published by Heinemann Library, 2005
Aimed at KS1 and older children, this book, one of a series, explains Down's syndrome in great detail in spite of large, clear print and lots of photos. Each section or chapter consists of only two pages and covers such items as: what it is; how doctors test for Down's; the fact that Down's people are very like everyone else; exercises to gain strength in babies; troubles with speaking and frustration at not being able to make themselves clear; reading and writing can be slower to learn, and sometimes children need extra help in school or perhaps need a special school. Some Down's people may need glasses or hearing aids and find that writing things down helps them remember - just like shopping lists help us all to remember what we need. Down's people enjoy eating out and the cinema and things like swimming and sports just like we all do. Some will live by themselves and others continue to live with family or in special places where they have extra help. Many work, sometimes in special workshops and other times in offices or shops. An index, a glossary and a list of organisations who can help is included and should be especially helpful in schools.
