Cancer (Young Explorer: What's it Like?) ISBN: 9780431112251
Published by Heinemann Library, 2005
One of a series of books for young children about various diseases and disabilities, this one explains cancer in simple terms with large print and lots of photos. The text covers such things as explaining what cancer is and how it develops, who can get it, different types, diagnosis, blood tests and scans, treatments such as surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy, side affects, getting back to normal, and preventing cancer. It also explains remission, repeat treatments, and that sometimes people die if the treatments don't work. By and large, however, this is an excellent explanation of the basics of what cancer is about, and should supply reassurance to those affected by it. The pictures are upbeat, and the very normality of what is happening to the children (and adults) we see makes the information palatable. A good resource for hospitals and schools where a classmate may have been recently diagnosed. There is a comprehensive glossary, an index and a few websites, which may or may not be in date as the book was published in 2005.
