I Know Someone with Epilepsy (Young Explorer: Understanding Health Issues) ISBN: 9781406220803
Published by Raintree, 2011
One in a series of books aimed at KS 1 &2 children, this book tells about epilepsy in an easily-read format, with large print and good photos that help the information along. Focusing on friendship, the book explains the facts about epilepsy, the different kinds of seizures and what causes them, the after-affects, how to help, treatments etc., and ultimately how we, as friends can support those who need it - at school and during play times. There is a short section on famous people who suffer from the condition, and the emphasis is on the fact that most people with it can live normal lives, even playing sport. The fact that some people have dogs who are trained to notice when a seizure is imminent and that some must wear a helmet for protection, is mentioned, and there is a list of ways in which one can be a good friend. There are Fact and Fiction pages that explain the problems some may face when interacting with friends. Altogether, this is an excellent introduction to the condition, told in words that younger people will readily understand. A glossary, an index, and a list of books and websites will prove valuable for project work.
