This form of bullying appears on the surface to be one of the milder sorts, and as the children are the ones who make the decision to stop it, one feels it will actually stop - even though it is a rather 'goody goody' child who comes up with the answer. On a bus trip to the zoo, the class is very excited. They are all wearing lots of bright coloured clothes and carrying their lunches. But unbeknownst to the rest of the class, Chloe and Tommy have come up with a 'cool' idea. They will wear only green clothes for the trip, and anyone who is wearing green will be part of their 'team' and they will only play with them. This works fine for the four kids who are wearing green, but everyone else feels left out, particularly the ones wearing blue because the green team has announced that blue is very un-cool: 'But the ones who felt really awful, the ones who felt truly bad, were the kids wearing blue (there were quite a few). They were hurt and embarrassed and mad!' The school trip is threatening to become a disaster with the children fighting and saying horrible things to each other, when Ella speaks up and explains that the whole idea is nonsense, that it is the inside of each of us that is important, and that everyone is special and should be kind. Chloe and Tommy think this over and decide she is right and admit their mistake: 'To hurt others because they are different is unkind and horrid and cruel. Far better to include everybody in a new club that clearly is cool.' Hence, the Rainbow Club. So in the end we learn that it is anyone who is different we are talking about - not just those wearing green or blue. It's a good lesson well-learned, and the cheerful and warm-hearted illustrations add a great deal to the story. Suggestions at the end for parents and teachers on how to use the book are welcome.
