Ann and her friends like to make fun of Joe because he is small and wears the wrong sort of shoes. Sometimes they make him cry. As Anne is walking home from school, four bigger girls begin following her, calling her names and bumping into her. She is very frightened. She finally crosses the road to be near adults, and the bullies don't follow. The experience helps her understand what Joe has been feeling.
