How to Be a Superhero Called Self-Control!: Super Powers to Help Younger Children to Regulate their Emotions and Senses ISBN: 9781849057172
Apsley and Brukner, Lauren
Published by Jessica Kingsley Pub, 2015
Intended for children with all kinds of behavioural, sensory, emotional and anger problems, this book's jazzy, 'with it' style should appeal to young children. As it must be used with an adult, it could well be something whole classes can benefit from, particularly if there are several children who actually have these problems. The book consists of a number of exercises that use children's imagination as well as their physical abilities to help them learn self-control. In each chapter, the Superhero tells a little story of a child with a particular problem and then 'teaches' the exercise that might help their control of that problem. The sections are: Frustration, Anxiety, Sensory Processing, Anger Management, and Emotional Regulation. The exercises are fun and easy to do. Sensory Processing has much to do with children who wiggle a lot, such as those with ADHD and those who get so involved with physical activity that they can't stop by themselves. There are fifteen superpowers in all, and children will enjoy doing them as well as benefiting from learning self-control. Lots of black and white illustrations add to the whole, and information at the back of the book for parents, teachers, therapists and carers will be of great use in planning sessions. Available from Amazon, from good book shops, and from the publisher, www.jkp.com.
