Can I tell you about Peanut Allergy? ISBN: 9781849055932
Blackstock, Alice and Dempsey, Sharon
Published by Jessica Kingsley Publishers, 2015
One of an excellent series of patient information books about different health problems and disabilities, this one concerns the fast-growing problem of peanut allergy. We meet Danny, who was diagnosed at six and who tells his story in his own words. He admits that in the beginning he found the prospect of having to manage his allergy quite daunting, but in time he has come to learn that he can live normally with a certain amount of care. Three short chapters on understanding the condition, how the body reacts, and how to treat it begin Danny's story, and then he goes on to explain severe and mild reactions and their different treatments such as adrenaline pens and antihistamine, how to cope at special occasions and at school, eating out, travelling, and how to deal with food labelling. As different countries present the latter in different ways, it is important to know these differences before you travel. There are advice sections for various people, friends, parents, etc. and all in all Danny is very reassuring about coping with a condition that can be serious and even life-threatening. There is also a comprehensive list of organisations and websites for the UK, for Ireland, the USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. This will be a super resource for families with a child with a peanut allergy; it combines facts with black and white line drawings that add to the interest, and it is highly readable. Available from Amazon, from good bookshops, and from the publisher, www.jkp.com.
