Heather is very happy with her two mums, Mama Kate and Mama Jane. They live in a nice house with an apple tree in the garden, and they have two pets, a dog and a cat. There are lots of twos in Heather's life, and that is all to the good as two is her favourite number. Mama Kate is a doctor, and she has two stethoscopes so that she and Heather can listen to each other's hearts. Mama Jane is a carpenter, and she has two hammers so that Heather can help with her various projects. It is only when Heather starts school and the other children talk about their dads that she begins to wonder why she doesn't have one too. Luckily, her teacher suggests that the children draw pictures of their families, and when Heather sees that one has only one mummy, one lives with her gran, one has a stepfather as well as a dad and others have two parents and siblings, she understands that all families are different and that as long as they love each other, they are a 'proper' family. The soft-focus, charming pictures are a welcome addition, as is the book as a whole. So few stories are available about single-sex parents, and this one is a fresh approach. Excellent!
