Giraffe is Left Out - A Book About Feeling Bullied (Behaviour Matters) ISBN: 9781445127675
Dunton, Trevor and Graves, Sue
Published by Franklin Watts Ltd, 2014
In this series of books on children's behaviour, animals take the part of children, thereby removing the stigma of the unacceptable behaviour onto another species. In this story, Giraffe gets angry because the teacher tells him and his two friends, Monkey and Little Lion to be kind to new pupil Leopard. Giraffe is jealous because Monkey and Little Lion are his friends and he doesn't want to share them with anyone else. He is unkind to Leopard and refuses to let him play. Leopard is, of course, sad and feels left out. The next day, though, when Leopard brings invitations for his birthday party to everyone in the class except Giraffe, it is Giraffe who is sad and feels left out. His two friends tell him that he has been unkind and that if he had been nice to Leopard, he wouldn't have been left out. When the teacher insists that Giraffe and Leopard should be partners in a project, Giraffe is very cross and says that they aren't friends and that he doesn't want to work with Leopard. Miss Bird doesn't listen. As they work together, they learn that each has different talents that compliment each other, and in the end, Giraffe apologises for his unkindness. Of course, he then gets the much-wanted invitation to the party, and all is well. While the story is about bullying, it is about bullying in an unusual form; it is more about being unkind, which Giraffe certainly is, and being unkind is a form of bullying behaviour. At the end Giraffe says: 'Let's all play together tomorrow. Then no one will be left out at all.' There are two pages giving adults ways of sharing the book with children. This series of books shows unacceptable behaviour in an interesting and subtle way.
