A First Look at: Healthy Teeth: Do I Have to Go to the Dentist? ISBN: 9780750252393
Published by Wayland (Publishers) Ltd, 2008
This is an excellent preparation for a first visit to the dentist. It shows clearly and in some detail why one should make regular visits to the dentist, the importance of brushing teeth, and why children should not be worried by the scare stories that some of their friends may tell them. It goes on to show us the waiting room, the chair 'that goes up and down', and all the special equipment the dentist uses, and we see a little girl having her teeth checked (wearing a bib) and then having them cleaned. The brush is 'a bit noisy' and 'tickles a little', but the little girl is pleased at the result. We also see a young boy having his teeth checked because he has developed a cavity. The x-ray machine comes into use here, and we also see the filling material being made up. We are told, but not shown, that the boy has been given an injection so he won't feel the drill, and we don't see the drill in action either - wisely. The picture shows us that the lad can tell that his mouth has gone numb. Finally, we see a group of children, including the two who have been to the dentist, enjoying a picnic, and we are told that having good teeth means that you can enjoy your food, and that will help make you healthy. The pictures are jolly and bright and 'wholesome' and help to tell the story quite as much as the text.
