Take a Deep Breath: A Book About Being Brave (Our Emotions & Behaviour) ISBN: 9781445138954
Published by Franklin Watts Ltd, 2015
Children are afraid of a good many things at different times in their young lives, and in this picture book we meet a class of children, all of whom show fear about something. Lucy is afraid of dogs; Tom is fearful of jumping into the swimming pool - he doesn't like the noise in his ears; Dan falls down and hurts his knee and cries; Josh doesn't want to go on stage in the school play. Each time one of the children faces a fear, he or she is told to 'take a deep breath and be brave'. This they do and discover that they can face their fears and find the fear doesn't exist after all. Even Miss Button, their teacher, who has been giving out the advice, finds at the end of the day when a spider lands on her arm that she too can be fearful. It is hardly surprising that the children chorus, 'Take a deep breath!' Lovely, bright and sunny pictures help the fears to be less fearful, and this story is perfect for discussion at school or at home. A storyboard story at the end of the book tells without words about Jess who is afraid of going on a big slide and overcomes her fears by wanting to join her friends in the fun. There are also two pages of help for parents and teachers who are using the book with children. A good solution to talking about serious subjects in PSHE lessons.
