Can I tell you about anxiety?: A guide for friends, family and professionals ISBN: 9781849055277
Tay, Kaiyee, Waite, Polly and Willetts, Lucy
Published by Jessica Kingsley, 2014
Megan, who is ten, has serious anxiety problems. She knows she has problems, and goes about explaining them to us with great maturity and in great detail. She starts by telling us what anxiety is and that everyone gets it sometimes - even that it can be good and necessary in some situations. She goes on then to tell us the different kinds of anxiety that she experiences: Generalised Anxiety Disorder (GAD) where she worries about many different things, Separation Anxiety Disorder where she worries about being separated from her parents, and Social Anxiety Disorder where she worries that other people won't like her. She explains too about other kinds of anxiety: Specific phobias such as Panic Disorder or Agoraphobia. She talks about the physical conditions that her anxiety brings on, such as butterflies, a fast heartbeat and feeling dizzy and sick. She also doesn't sleep well and this brings on tiredness and an inability to concentrate. Megan has been referred to CAMHS (Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service) and is getting help from a Clinical Psychologist called Jo. Jo is using Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) with Megan, and Megan is able to explain what this is and how it is administered to her in some detail. There is advice for parents, friends and teachers on how they can help, a reading list (mostly American books) and a list of websites in the UK, the US, and Australia. This is one of a series of excellent information books on various health problems and disabilities, and should be of great help to children, their families and friends. Available from good bookshops, from Amazon, or from the publisher: www.jkp.com.
