Sam is having a bad day because his baby brother has spent the night crying and Sam hasn't been able to sleep. In the morning he gets very angry because his dad won't play football with him right then. Then he gets cross at lunch because he's given carrots and he 'hates' carrots. When he's sent to his room, he doesn't want to calm down, and by the time he gets to a birthday party in the afternoon, he is fizzing. He pushes Ellie because he wants her cake, and he ruins musical chairs because he doesn't get a seat and is 'out'. Aunty Jen takes him out to the garden for a little talk, and she explains that counting to ten slowly can help when someone is feeling angry. Sam and his Aunt think of other things he might do when he gets angry, and when he goes back to the party, he says 'sorry' to the other children. Simplistic, possibly, but there are some good ideas here, and just admitting the fact that children can get extremely angry is a good starting point. There are two pages of notes for people working with children which will help either at school or at home, and the pictures are jolly and fun.
