Who Feels Scared?: A Book about Being Afraid (Our Emotions & Behaviour) ISBN: 9781445101521
Published by Franklin Watts, 2011
When Robin and Ravi go to Jack's house for a sleepover, they are all terribly excited. But a loud growling noise seems very scary to Robin and Ravi. Jack knows the noise is coming from his dog, Pip, and when they understand who is making the noise, the other two are fine. The evening continues with other strange noises, and it is Jack's older sister, Ellie, who helps the boys understand about fears and how to help get over them. She herself is afraid of flying, although none of the boys are, and she explains that she uses her personal stereo to listen to music and that this helps her. Even Pip is afraid of something - of fireworks - and the family help him by turning on the TV and playing games with him. When Dad tells a scary story at bedtime, all three boys and Ellis hide until they all realise that it is only a story and there is nothing to be afraid of. The point is nicely made that everyone has different fears, and that there are ways of getting over them, and the comic-style pictures are fun and engaging. At the end of the book, a two page wordless story shows Tom having his first night away from home staying with his granny; it gives some good ideas for discussion. This is followed by some suggestions to parents and carers on how to use the book. A cheerful, chirpy production that will be fun to use with children who are not TOO scared!
