Can I Tell You about Diabetes (Type 1)?: A Guide for Friends, Family and Professionals ISBN: 9781849054690
Edge, Julie and MacConville, Julia
Published by Jessica Kingsley Pub, 2014
Debbie has diabetes and she wants to tell us what it is like. She describes in great detail about her injections, her blood tests, the food she eats and how she has to plan it. She talks about her concerns, how sport affects her insulin levels, and about low and high blood sugars and how they make her feel. She explains exactly what type 1 diabetes is and how to recognise the signs. She also tells us how she handles it at school and how supportive friends and teachers are. There is information about her trips to see the diabetes team every three months and how they check her out. We also learn about insulin pumps, although Debbie doesn't use one. She is positive about her life and is quite used to the extra work that being a diabetic makes. She loves sport and is active and confident - a great role model. At the end of the book there is information about how friends, teachers and family can help. The black and white illustrations help the information along too, and there is a comprehensive list of international help organisations. An excellent introduction to an often quite complicated lifestyle that Debbie accepts as natural. Available from good book shops, from Amazon, and from the publisher at www.jkp.com.
