Can I Tell You about Dyspraxia?: A Guide for Friends, Family and Professionals ISBN: 9781849054478
Boon, Maureen and Hallam, Imogen
Published by Jessica Kingsley Pub, 2014
Marco has dyspraxia, and this interesting and well written book explains many of the problems he must deal with. Marco's dyspraxia was not diagnosed until he had been in primary school for some time, so his general problems with movement, with sitting still, with falls and knocking things over were not recognised. When he went for assessment and met a physio and an occupational therapist, he got the specialist help he needed with his coordination. Sports are still a challenge, though he loves swimming and trampolining and non-competitive activities. He gives lots of hints about how to help him - and things he does to help himself. Secondary school has brought new problems, but solutions such as being able to use his laptop in class rather than trying to write have helped. We are given some facts about dyspraxia - and about verbal dyspraxia - and at the end of the book there are lists of ways parents, teachers and friends can help. There is also an excellent list of useful organisations, many of them international. There really should be a copy of this book in every school. Available from Amazon, from good bookshops, and from the publisher at www.jkp.com.
