Can I Tell You About OCD: A Guide for Family, Friends and Professionals ISBN: 9781849053815
Published by Jessica Kingsley Pub, 2013
Katie is 13 and has developed OCD. In her case the problem is her thoughts - bad ones that she feels she must get rid of by compulsive behaviour. She explains the differences between obsession and compulsion and that it is her obsessions that bring about the compulsive actions. These can take the form of tapping a certain number of times, or asking the same question over and over again. These behaviours make it difficult for Katie at school and at home and with her friends, and she often tries to avoid being out with others who don't understand her needs. In her case, the OCD seems to her like an enemy. She speaks of it as though it is making her do things she doesn't want to do. Cognitive behaviour therapy and medication (SSRIs) are helping Katie to defeat this enemy, and step by step she is getting better. Most of all she needs support and understanding from family, teachers and friends. There are sections on how others can help, and at the end of the book there is a detailed list of the kinds of obsessions and compulsions that those with OCD can suffer from. We are also given a list of related disorders and another of books, organisations and websites having to do with the condition. An important book on a subject not often covered in literature for young people and children. The book is available from bookshops, from Amazon, and from the publisher: www.jkp.com, Tel: 020 7833 2307.
