Why Do I Feel Scared?: A First Look at Being Brave ISBN: 9780750271394
Published by Wayland (Publishers) Ltd, 2013
While the title of this book has to be with being fearful, the text is more about different kinds of courage - and not only the usual kinds. The pictures show us a boy having to find the courage to walk into a new classroom, a girl wearing calipers who is willing to play rounders with someone else doing the running, and children being brave enough to tell their mum that they really don't like the tea she has made for them. We see children learning to skateboard and having to get up after a fall, children accepting being different from others and helping those who can't stand up for themselves. We see times when it is legitimate and even good to feel fear and others when fear should be faced up to and conquered. 'The world needs brave people. Do you think you could be one of them?' is how the story ends. Good for schools particularly, and some advice for teachers and parents at the end as well as a list of further resources, add much to the production.
