The Asperkid's (Secret) Book of Social Rules: The Handbook of Not-so-obvious Social Guidelines for Tweens and Teens With Asperger Syndrome ISBN: 9781849059152
Published by Jessica Kingsley Pub, 2012
Jennifer Cook O'Toole has Asperger Syndrome, is married to an Aspie, and has three Aspie children. This should make her an expert in a big way, and this long (279 pages) and detailed book is a welcome addition to the literature. Her American sense of fun comes out strongly in her writing, and the black and white comic-style illustrations add to the humourous approach. These are social guidelines and cover subjects like how to say thank you, how to say 'I'm sorry', how to be interesting and interested in others, taking criticism, learning not to be too honest, and many, many more. There are lots of 'Practice sessions' at the end, as well as lists of resources. There is emphasis on not giving up, on starting over when things go wrong and on learning what a special and unique person you are. This will be a really useful tool for both Aspies and their families, and it fills a gap that needed to be filled. Available from Amazon, from bookshops, or from the publisher at www.jkp.com.
