The Panicosaurus: Managing Anxiety in Children Including Those with Asperger Syndrome ISBN: 9781849053563
Published by Jessica Kingsley Pub, 2012
The Panicosurus is a rather cuddly dinosaur who is able to cause all sorts of trouble. He inhabits the amygdala in the brain, and when he gets bored, he becomes mischievous. His opposite number, the Smartosaurus, lives in the neocortex, and he is the character who can help calm things down when Panicosaurus plays up. These wonderfully thought-out creatures come to the fore when we meet a little girl called Mabel Green. Mabel is a seriously anxious child; she probably also has Asperger's Syndrome, but whether she does or not, the problem is her anxieties - which are numerous and crippling. It is her father who tells her about Panicosaurus and Smartosaurus and who helps her to begin to come to terms with her terrible panic attacks. We see them happening at home and at school, and we see the various ways they are handled by her parents, her teacher, and her classmates. The latter are very supportive and know just what to do when Mabel suffers a bad time because a substitute has come to teach the class instead of her beloved Miss Pink. Coping strategies are given, not only in the story but in six pages for parents and carers at the end. There is also an excellent introduction, which will be very useful. The pictures are glorious - full of colour and fun and adding greatly to the imaginative text. Mabel will learn to conquer her fears, and so will any child introduced to the Panicosaurus and his nemesis. Available from Amazon, from bookshops, or from the publisher at www.jkp.com.
