Can I Tell You About Epilepsy?: A Guide for Friends, Family and Professionals ISBN: 9781849053099
Hellier, Scott and Lambert, Kate
Published by Jessica Kingsley Pub, 2012
In this simply written guidebook, we meet three children, Ellie, Ahmed and Charlie, each of whom has a different form of epilepsy. Their stories are told from their perspectives, each in the first person, and there is much emphasis on how they feel about their friends reactions to their various kinds of seizures and the kind of support they need. Ellie has Absence Seizures, and she clearly explains what this means. Ahmed has Focal or Partial Seizures, and he, too, explains his problems. Charlie has Tonic Clonic Seizures, the full-blown epilepsy that most of us know about. The importance of classmates understanding and of teachers' support and help is emphasized. There is a good section on basic first aid and quite a long section for teachers and how they can be of most practical help. There is a long list of websites in the UK, USA, Canada, Australia and those of International inportance, and black and white line illustrations complete the whole. This is a truly excellent introduction for children newly diagnosed with epilepsy and will be extremely useful for their parents and teachers too. Available from Amazon, from bookshops, or from the publisher at www.jkp.com.
