I can think of no more reassuring idea for a child who has lost a grandparent than the fact that said grandparent is having all sorts of fantastic adventures. In rhymes, Judith Kerr gives us the story of an old lady whose husband Henry has died: 'My Henry died and went to heaven, But now he's got his wings They let him out from four till seven And we do all sorts of things.' Together again in her imagination, they visit lions and ride dinosaurs, have tea in the jungle and climb Everest. There is no end to their adventures, adventures with a wonderful child-like quality, but sometimes they just like to sit and think about their happy life together. Kerr's beautiful, soft crayon pictures, complete with cuddly cat and lots of angels, will be reassuring to children who have suffered loss and poignant to those who read the story with them.
