Come to School Too, Blue Kangaroo! (Blue Kangeroo) ISBN: 9780007258673

Lily is starting a new school, and she must have pencils, a pencil case, a school bag and a lunch box. Blue Kangaroo is going along too, and Lily isn't sure he is happy about it: 'I don't think he wants to go to the new school,' she says. 'He's worried about getting lost; he's a bit scared.' Of course, it is Lily who is scared, and her family is reassuring. But when she and her mum get to school the next day, Blue Kangaroo has developed a tummy ache and wants to go home. The teacher will know what to do, mum says firmly, and so she does. Blue Kangaroo sits on the windowsill and watches the proceedings with interest. Lily has a wonderful time doing all the things that children do in school, and she is so absorbed that she leaves Blue Kangaroo behind at the end of the day. Mum says he will still be there in the morning, but oh my... what does Blue Kangaroo get up to during the night? There is a surprise for the teacher the next day, but Lily knows who drew the pictures and built towers out of blocks. This is a lovely, gentle story about school fears being displaced onto a toy, and because the Blue Kangaroo is happy at school, Lily will be too. Chichester Clark's pictures glow with joy and enthusiasm.
