The wonderful Shirley Hughes has produced another super book - this time not about adjusting to school as a new pupil, but about being able to see what school is like before actually going there. Lily is having a difficult day, and her favourite toy Bobbo, a floppy dog, is getting the brunt of it. When mum and Lily are going to the shops, they see children climbing on the school bus, and Lily does something really dreadful. She swings Bobbo around and throws him; he lands on top of the bus, and is driven away. Mum calls the school to ask them to find Bobbo, but when the bus is checked, he isn't there. Lily is inconsolable. Meanwhile, the little dog has fallen into a bush where some of the children find him and take him into their classroom; he quite enjoys all the attention. When Lily and mum arrive to collect him, she is allowed to go into the class and see the children and the project they have been set by their teacher - to give Bobbo a name. She is able to see what school is like, and mum tells her that Bobbo liked school and she will too when she is old enough to go. It's a simple story, but rather a parable too, about what not to do with a toy. Lily promises Bobbo she won't ever do it again.
