Drugs (The Real Deal) ISBN: 9780431907369
Published by Heinemann Raintree, 2008
In this series of books, aimed at upper primary and secondary children, a range of topics about health is covered. Quite detailed information includes Case Studies, Newsflashes and Top Tips boxes. There are also discussion questions in What Do You Think boxes. Photographs add greatly to the whole. In this book we learn about different kinds of drugs, legal and illegal, and the dangers of both. But the emphasis is on the recreational: Cannabis, depressants, solvents, hallucinogens, stimulants, opiates, and anabolic steroids are covered in detail, with the properties and hazards explained. Street names of the drugs are given and there is quite a lot on short-term and long-term effects of using, including a set of photos that show how addiction can change a person's looks. The recovery from addiction, including detoxification, rehabilitation, and long-term support are given in pull-no-punches terms, and two pages at the end give practical advice to 'Saying No to Drugs' and a list of 'Drug Facts'. An excellent book that is quite clear on the dangers and perils of misusing drugs. As this series is particularly useful for schools and project work, the glossary, a list of other books and websites, and an index are welcome additions.
