New Brothers and Sisters (Tough Topics) ISBN: 9780431908335

One of a series of 'issue' books aimed at Key Stages 1 and 2 children which will also be useful for lesser ability older children. Addressed to the individual child, 'New Brothers and Sisters' is a lively introduction to the differences a baby will make within the family. We start with the run-up to the baby's birth - lots of good ways to help get ready. Then we talk about the new baby's needs and that these can be tiring for parents, that the baby needs lots of their time. Visitors and presents for the baby can mean that sometimes 'older children may feel left out'. I liked the fact that the point is made that: 'Fussing and crying is not the best way to get help.' Learning to share your toys as well as your parents means putting away special things so the baby can't get them, and it is never right to be angry with him or her because babies are too little to understand. Lots of special ways to interact with the new sibling are given. The importance of talking with someone you trust about your feelings finishes an impressive production. Lots of good photos, an index, a glossary, and a 'Find Out More' page add to the information, and will be particularly useful for schools. The large, clear print is a bonus.
