A sophisticated and detailed discussion on smoking. The first chapter on why people smoke contains the interesting fact that the downturn in teenage smoking in the late 90s was probably due to mobile phones. It seems peer pressure made it more 'cool' to have a mobile than to smoke! A detailed chapter on what is in cigarettes is followed by one on the effects smoking has on the body. The list of conditions smokers are likely to experience is harrowing, as are the various stories told by sufferers throughout the book. Further chapters on passive smoking and how to stop, as well as a good list of resources, a glossary and an index make this most useful to teenagers and even adults, but good readers in years 7 and 8 will cope.
