Injured Spider (Urgency Emergency!) ISBN: 9780747597650

One of a series of very clever books about various emergencies that can be treated in hospital - only this time the staff and patients are all animals and there is much reference to nursery rhymes and stories. In this one, a spider has been injured being washed down a waterspout! Little Miss Muffet calls the ambulance in spite of being frightened of spiders and Dr Glenda and Nurse Percy (a dog and chicken respectively) test Incy Wincy for concussion and stitch up the cut on her head. As there is no one at home to look after Incy Wincy, Miss Muffet takes her home for the night until she is better. Children and parents will much enjoy the references, not all of which are explained. For instance, we see Nurse Percy bandaging up 'one of the King's men, whose foot had been squashed by a huge egg'! These clever insertions add much to the story, as do the splendid illustrations. The range of expressions on the spider's face are wonderful to behold. While the story is highly imaginative, it does explain some procedures and would be a good choice for children's wards.
