Abuse and Neglect (Emotional Health Issues) ISBN: 9780750249140
Published by Wayland, 2008
A pull-no-punches information book about child abuse. It begins with a chapter on children's rights and needs, including the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. It then goes on to explain the four different kinds of abuse in great detail: emotional, physical, sexual, and neglect. There are numerous case studies, lots of statistics, and 'In focus' boxes that summarize the information. One of the latter explains that 'There may be a reason why someone abuses, but there is never an excuse.' This is a recurrant and important theme. A difficult subject to write about, but one that needs every bit of attention it can get. Abused children will find this book helpful as they are encouraged to find solutions. Helplines are given, and there is an ultimately positive message about recovery. An index, a glossary, a list of further books to read and another of websites add to the information.
