Why am I so Tired? (A First Look At Diabetes) ISBN: 9780750252379
Published by Wayland, 2008
One of an excellent series on childhood issues and health problems. The text and the warmly human illustrations meld together to make an informative and encouraging information book about diabetes - a simple explanation of insulin and glucose levels, what sort of symptoms one might experience, the fact that there are two types of diabetes, the kind of medicine one might have to take and the various ways it can be delivered, checking blood sugar and that parents will be involved in your medication, worries and problems you may have, the importance of exercise, and the fact that meeting other children with diabetes can help one feel less 'different' - all this is explained in simple terms. The importance of talking to family and friends about how one feels is emphasised, and at the end we are told, 'Diabetes means you have to learn to take care of yourself in a special way. Once you learn to do that, you'll find you can do all the same things other children do and have just as much fun.' A page of information for parents and carers explains much about how to approach diabetes to children, how to emphasise the positive, and to make sure that teachers are fully aware of the situation. A list of further books to read and a few resources for adults are included.
