I Think I am Going to Sneeze (A First Look At) ISBN: 9780750252386
Published by Wayland, 2008
We start with a graphic description of what having an allergy is like - nose tingly, eyes watery, throat scratchy, skin itchy - and that this can feel like a cold. Allergies can affect different people different ways, and causes are explained in some detail. Doctors can give medication to help allergies, but in some cases a hospital visit becomes necessary. Tests are mentioned and the importance of avoiding the reactant. There is no mention of anaphylaxis except in the two pages of parent information at the back of the book, but it is apparent from the text and illustrations that some children have more severe reactions than others. The good news is that many children grow out of their allergies. Besides the parent information, there are also some resources for adults and a list of further books to read. This is part of a really excellent series of books on different issues faced by children, and the emphasis here is on the feelings and emotions children with allergies may face. Particularly good for reassurance.
