Do I Have to Go to Hospital?: A First Look at Going to Hospital ISBN: 9780750252867
Harker, Lesley and Thomas, Pat
Published by Wayland, 2008
This story emphasis the emotional issues on going to hospital. While some procedures are mentioned, it is mainly about the fact that being ill isn't much fun, but that doctors and nurses can help one get better, whether in the surgery or in hospital. Sometimes hospital stays are short - for a broken arm, for instance - and sometimes they have to be longer. It admits that hospitals can be 'scary' places, big and noisy, but your parents can stay with you, and there will be other children to talk to and play with. Doctors and nurses are to be trusted, and soon you will feel better and be able to go home. The warm pictures are comforting and are very much part of the information given. X-rays are mentioned as well as some of the other 'tools' used, and we are told we can still watch TV and talk to friends by phone. But by and large this is all about reassurance. One of a really excellent series on various issues. Included are two pages of advice to parents and carers on how to use the book, as well as a further list of reading and some resources for adults
