Eating Disorders and Body Image (Talk About) ISBN: 9780750249362
Published by Wayland, 2008
A fairly densely written information book about the three main eating disorders: Anorexia, Bulimia, and Compulsive Eating Disorder. Low self-esteem is emphasised, as is the difficulty in diagnosing the problems. Many discussion points are raised, some of them having to do with the media and the prevalence of internet sites that actively encourage anorexics. There are a number of suggestions about preventing the problems arising in the first place and a chapter on treatment (including the possibility of hospital stays), along with 'Talk About' boxes and short case studies from sufferers and their friends. Facts and statistics are included as well. I found one typographical error and another rather more serious oversight. In a pie chart diagram about the different food groups, a considerably larger section is given over to sweets and fizzy drinks than to fruit and vegetables, though the text gives the right information. This should be corrected in a new edition. There is an index, a glossary, and a list of books and websites for further research.
