Open Wide!: My First Trip to the Dentist (New Experiences) ISBN: 9780750252829
Published by Wayland, 2007
While the information in this book could be used for younger children, I've put the age range as over 6 as I feel some of the comic-style pictures might be misunderstood by little ones. For instance, the little girl going up and down and round and round in the dentist's chair looks as though the experience might be frightening. Older children will enjoy the pictures immensely, and lots of good information gets through. Oliver has a hurting tooth, so mum phones the dentist for appointments for him and for his younger sister Kate. Kate tells the story, and she is a little nervous about her first trip to the dentist. Mum is reassuring and tells the children they will have to open their mouths very wide. Oliver needs a filling, and he explains just how the dentist and his assistant have done the job. We see the dentist with a face mask, and lots of the equipment is explained. The children learn how to brush their teeth properly and are given advice on what to eat. There are two pages of notes for parents and teachers at the end, including some on using the books in the literacy hour. A short list of further books is included.
