Dennis Duckling, who lives in a pond with his parents and small sister, must leave the pond when his parents can't look after the ducklings any longer. Annie Duck (the social worker character) takes them to a family of ducks who live on the river who have agreed to look after them. Dennis and his sister must learn to live in a very different place with very different ducks, and at first Dennis is sad and frightened. Annie agrees to bring his parents for a visit, and after that, he starts to adjust. The end is left open as to what will happen to the ducklings, but it is made clear that Dennis is consulted about what he wants to happen. There is an excellent page-by-page booklet along with the story that gives discussion ideas and further information on how children feel about going into care. The illustrations in simple shapes and flat colours help make the story accessible.
