Talking about drugs ISBN: 9780749655105
Published by Franklin Watts (Talking About series), 2004
Though clear enough for younger children, this book could also be used with older kids who aren't so keen on reading. The print is large, and there are plenty of pictures and information boxes to keep interest levels high. The first four short chapters are about drugs in general, including alcohol, tobacco and medicine from the doctor. We go on then to illegal drugs, with paragraphs on all the major drugs and their effects. The risks, the reasons people take drugs, a chapter on how to say 'no', and one on how hard it is to give up make up the bulk of the rest of the book. The usual index, list of further reading, web sites, and organisations complete the whole. A reasonably detailed basic introduction that makes the dangers real.
