Splat the Cat ISBN: 9780007284542
Published by HarperCollins Children's Books, 2008
Splat does NOT want to go to his first day at cat school. 'If I hide from the day, maybe it'll go away.' But, of course, it doesn't, and Splat must think of all sorts of reasons not to go. Mum isn't having it, and, determindly cheerful, she gives him his lunch. Splat decides he needs a friend, so pops his pet mouse Seymour into his lunch box. Still complaining, Splat and mum leave. At school, his fellow classmates and teacher (Mrs Wimpydimple) are friendly and welcoming, and Splat learns that cats (and therefore himself) are amazing. There is also an episode when Seymour escapes and almost becomes lunch for Splat's classmates when 'the cats did what cats do'. All is well when Seymour becomes the hero of the hour and the class must learn that 'Cats DON'T chase mice.' Splat is more than ready to return to school the next day. The wonderful pictures are surrealistic and huge fun with lots of detail to enjoy. Smashing!
