Five years after her mum's death, twelve year old Lizzie still feels she is loved by her, hears mum's encouraging words in her head, enjoys their shared love of poetry, and lives a seemingly normal and happy life with her younger brother Eric, her father, and the au pair, Bex. Eric is an enigma. Only two when his mum died, at seven he is highly imaginative, stubborn, lively and occasionally has tantrums. Lizzie loves him dearly, but she and Bex have learned to handle him carefully. Dad lives within himself and does not like to talk about mum's death. When Eric comes home from a school trip to the Natural History Museum and tells Lizzie he has seen mum working in the shop there, she is appalled and doesn't know what to do. Are there family secrets she doesn't know about? What if dad has been lying to them all these years? When Eric begins talking out loud to his mum and using his memory box of her as a means of communication, Lizzie and a very understanding Bex must make plans to solve the mystery. Written in the first person by Lizzie, the story tells us much about what is going on in her mind. While occasionally meandering and slow, it is a good read, full of truth, even though sometimes one must suspend disbelief. Lizzie's style is just right for pre-teen girls.
