The Colours in Me: Writing and Poetry by Adopted Children and Young People ISBN: 9781905664597
Published by British Association for Adoption and Fostering (BAAF), 2008
This remarkable compendium of stories, memoirs, poems and art work is a paean to the resilience of children. All the children and young people contributors have been adopted, and all tell of their experiences with great honesty. Eighty children were involved, from age 4 to 20, and the book could, therefore, be used with almost anyone. The entries are sad, distressing, euphoric - and ultimately uplifting. The book is divided into six sections - Adoption stories, On being adopted, On being apart (from birth families), Staying in touch, Revisiting my birth place, and Messages (from the children directly to those being adopted, to social workers, adoptive parents, etc.) I particularly like the fact that each contributor is given a paragraph at the end so we can learn something about them as individuals. Children from many countries are represented, as well as some wijth learning difficulties. Adoptive children will find much in this book to identify with and to find consoling.
